Relationships are spiritual opportunities, not an exchange of needs.
Many of us have the false idea that the purpose of a relationship is to meet our needs and fulfill our desires in some way.
This transaction-based model of relationships is why so many of them seem empty and despondent,
because there's nothing real and intimate about them. Relationships are a spiritual opportunity for personal evolution. There is no better chance to discover your capacity for love, forgiveness, compassion, complete self-expression and personal greatness.
Nowhere else will you find the biggest and the smallest part yourself. Nowhere else will you be confronted with self-imposed limits on intimacy. Nowhere else can you forgive yourself so deeply or love so purely. That is the true purpose of a relationship, to serve mutual personal growth and the ultimate expression of each individual.
It's a chance to share your enthusiasm for being alive and give yourself to someone else. Relationships provide an opportunity to illuminate some part of yourself that has long been obscured by fear and sadness; to contemplate the greatness of another person so that he/shr can enter the magnificence of their soul and want to express themselves.
In this way, the relationship becomes the greatest tool for personal discovery and spiritual growth.
